Staff For Fit Not Speed
Hiring staff can be one of the most challenging aspects of managing a practice or any business for that matter. TAKE YOUR TIME. Often times we look to plug holes so fast that we are willing to compromise the speed of the hire vs. taking the time to make the right hire. The right fit may not always come from the top of their class, the most elite training or prestigious background. The right hire needs to have the right temperament for the environment, be coachable, be willing to learn new skills in your practice and understand that patient care comes before their own needs and personal interests.
To quote the legendary hockey coach Herb Brooks, while constructing the 1980’S U.S. Men’s Hockey team who won the gold medal after assembling a roster that left many of the “best” statistical players off the Olympic roster he responded, “I’m not looking for the best players; I’m looking for the right players.”
Understanding the value and potential that a candidate brings to the table in addition to what they have already accomplished will help you find what is right for your specific needs.
From a practice perspective, having a revolving door of staff due to a willingness to sacrifice speed vs. fit will end up costing you more time and money with consistent low office morale as opposed to taking the time to find the right hires for your practice.
